Cloister Shop

The installation “Cloister Shop” gives the impression of a mass production. A beguiling odor of roses excites the senses; colorful Madonnas seduce the eye. You want to touch them and yet respect their visible fragility. Clarity and beauty hold you captive. You want to possess, honor, never again lose them. But these figures withdraw, remain an apparition, transitory, temporary. They melt, dissolve into bubbly foam. The Madonnas are made of soap; each one a unique fabrication and yet an article of daily use.

This kind of art moves again and again between the poles of art and commerce, of use and expense, sense and nonsense. Hereby it is not only a question of overstepping boundaries, but also of uniting seemingly non-unifiable contrasts and values. Which is the original, the unicum or the multiple? It can hardly be determined and loses significance.

The Madonnas are purchasable. The heavenly and the earthly combine in them.
